I love teaching ART!

June 14, 2008

So I just finished teaching my first week of Art at Next Gen and it was so fun! I love being the art teacher there because 1) I love the people I work with. 2) I get a 3 hour lunch break 3) I’m going to have cut arms from carrying my art box everywhere and 4) the Kids say the funniest things. One of this weeks lessons was about Abstract art and I showed them lots of shapes that really didn’t look like anything. The whole point was to show them the unrecognizable shape, they would respond that they didn’t know what it was and therefore this is what made it “Abstract”. Unfortunately whenever I’d pull out an abstract blob they’d respond with something incredibly random, like “it’s a Dinosaur!” or “It’s a viola!” It was so funny because these kids are 1-4 years old and it came to a point where I would simply get excited about going into each class to hear what random things they would use their imaginations to see. Maybe that’s what Jesus was speaking of when he said the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to infants and children. They see things that the world just cannot see… beyond seeing that the squiggly shape is really a “ghost carrying a turtle”, they probably can see Jesus a lot more clearly than I. Lord give me a pure heart so I can see the turtle too…
